A Sacred Place
In my last post we talked about the importance of creating a home where our entire family thrives. How the tasks of our everyday life stem from a heart to love and serve those closest to us. Our to-do list looks less like drudgery and more like cultivation.
When thinking about creating a home where the entire family thrives, a simple way to incorporate self-care as a mom is to create a sacred space for you. A special place you can retreat to. A corner of your life to find rest, to be creative, to be reminded of who you are. A place you can feel most at home. A room or place all your own.
Here is my sacred space inside my home. The place I feel most alive and most myself. It happens to also be my writing desk. This desk is special because it belonged to my great grandparents. For years it lived in my grandma's farm attic. A few years ago my grandma gifted me this heirloom. This place is special because it connects me to my roots and my heritage. When I sit at my desk, the entire left side is a bookshelf - a place to store inspiration and books I want to quickly reference. It is also conveniently next to my nightstand so I can easily grab my next book to read at night. To the right is my cork board wall with my notes for stories I am working on. To the right of the cork board wall is a sliding glass door where I open the curtains and let the light shine in. This desk is in my room. When I have a thought I want to flesh out or need a space to be myself, I come here. I can close the door and I am in my own little world where my thoughts come alive and have a place to be shared. This desk is a space that reminds me of where I came from and who I am. It is a personal place to retreat to when the chaos in the house is overwhelming. It reminds me I have words to say and people to serve. It is a sacred place.
This week a special book came out. A book that explores home and how we find our place in the world. Almost 5 years ago (when my oldest son was a new baby) I stumbled upon a podcast called Simple Mom. At a time where I was trying to navigate the newborn stage and figuring out how to reorient my home life with kids, this podcast was a guide - a refreshing and inspirational guidepost to my day and my life. Simple Mom is now The Art of Simple and the podcast is The Simple Show. I have followed Tsh Oxenreider for the past 5 years - reading her blog, listening to her podcast and buying all of her books. This is why I am so excited to share her latest book At Home in the World. The book documents her family's trip around the world a few years ago, but most importantly it talks about finding our place, our home in the world. Where we call home matters. This whole week she has been doing fun podcast episodes talking about places she feels at home in the world. Here is a video telling a bit more about her book.
Where do you call home? What is your sacred place in your home? I invite you to find that sacred space just for you. A place you feel most alive, most yourself and most importantly - at home.
